Naval display Canada's navy is spread all over the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, this was especially the case during the two World Wars. However, with time, Canada's navy became very old and it was necessary to refit her with new vessels. The move to rejuvenate the RCN began in 1983 when the federal government approved the expenditure of funds for the procurement of 6 new frigates. This contract was given to a New Brunswick company -- Saint John Shipbuilding Limited. Approval for six more was confirmed in 1987. This move ensured Canada's ability to protect its coastline, which is the longest of any other nation in the world. The twelve ships were named after ten capitals and two major cities in Canada, in which case, the first ship was christened the HMCS Halifax. |
